Yoga nidra (“yogic sleep”) is meant to illicit a state of complete relaxation while awake and aware. Anyone can do this practice! It is a wonderful (and enjoyable) antidote for anxiety, stress (including PTSD), and their effects, such as headaches, insomnia, and certain types of pain. It is practiced while lying on your back on a blanket, mat or carpet, so that you are comfortable and well-supported. You may want a thin pillow (no more than a few inches) or folded blanket under your head and a rolled towel or blanket under your knees, for greater comfort. Be sure you will be warm enough as your body temperature will drop during the practice. If you fall asleep often during yoga nidra you are likely not getting enough restful sleep at night.
